Los Gatos occupies a unique position at the edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains, one of California's most significant mountain ranges. The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District manages several major preserves immediately accessible from Los Gatos, including Sierra Azul with over 19,000 acres of protected wilderness. These open space areas provide residents with direct access to trails, mountain biking routes, and natural habitat without a long drive from town.
Sierra Azul includes Mount Umunhum at 3,486 feet, which opened to public access in 2017 following site restoration, and features a 3.9-mile summit trail offering views across the valley. St. Joseph's Hill Preserve, located on land that was once part of a Jesuit novitiate, offers 4.2 miles of trails and historic vineyard views. El Sereno Preserve west of Los Gatos provides additional trail access. These preserves collectively offer more than 40 miles of maintained multiuse trails for hiking, bicycling, and equestrian use.
