No-exam life insurance

Understanding who qualifies for rapid underwriting, the mechanics of how it operates, and what happens if you don't qualify.

A number of major carriers now provide accelerated underwriting: within defined age and benefit limits, they render decisions using the application, prescription records, driving history, and other available data rather than a physical exam. Decisions can arrive within hours for many applicants. Your quotes here show whether each carrier expects an exam, may request one, or won't require one.

What it changes

Skipping an exam doesn't mean skipping underwriting. Your answers get verified, and a policy issued with untrue answers can be challenged within the first two years. If the carrier's data triggers concerns, they may still order an exam or lab results. At that stage, you can choose whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, applicants below approximately 60 seeking coverage up to the carrier's accelerated limit, with no significant health issues and no tobacco or nicotine use within the past year. Some carriers will use results from a recent doctor's visit with lab work instead of requiring an exam.

When an exam is needed, a licensed paramedical professional typically conducts a brief 20- to 30-minute session at your home or workplace in the Los Gatos area, at no charge. Exam results can sometimes improve your rate classification if you're in good health, so an exam isn't necessarily a disadvantage.
